Red Abalone

Red Abalone have come a long way. No, really. First there were bazillions of Red Abalone, then the humans and the sea urchins competed to sea who could decimate the population more efficiently, (with the sea urchins running a distant 2nd). Now, in recent years the Red Abalone has begun to make a meager comeback in some areas, but still must continue to keep looking over its’ ecological/habitatual shoulder as humans continue to poach them and pollute the oceans in new and different ways, and the sea urchins are ever-ready to make a significant ding in their numbers.

You can now fish for Red Abalone legally along some parts of Northern California’s shores, but Red Abalone continue to be strictly protected, especially in southern regions, where they were nearly completely wiped out in recent decades. The Red Abalone does have one friend though, the Great White Shark. Sadly, sometimes well-meaning and conscientious sport divers get caught in the cross fire, but we can at least hope that at least one greedy-short-sighted, money hungry poacher may get crunched up in the White’s unforgiving jaws once in a while. Someone’s got to stick up for the Red Abalone!
