Abalone is here, abalone is there, they’re everywhere, but they were almost no-where, and still are in some parts of the world because even though they come out of the sea looking like an ugly rock and they are a bit slimy and not too pretty underneath either, with the exception of their shells, people the world over have developed a healthy appetite for this ancient giant snail over the mast 200,000,000 years.
Abalone come from the sea and are found (or were) in tide pools, around coral reefs, and suctioned onto underwater rock formations in places as divergent as south Africa and southern California. If you have a taste for abalone, you don’t have to dive into the ocean, or even get your feet wet, as your ancestors did, you can go to many grocery stores and even order abalone online if it suits you.
